Chief of Party of USDA Feed Enhancement for Ethiopian Development – Phase III and ACDI/VOCA Country Representative in Ethiopia 

Carl Birkelo is the chief of party and technical lead of our Feed Enhancement for Ethiopian Development – Phase III project (FEED III), funded by the United States Department of Agriculture through Food for Progress. He is also ACDI/VOCA’s country representative in Ethiopia. Carl’s work on livestock sector development in Ethiopia began in 2009 with FEED I. His project received recognition in 2017 from the President of Ethiopia for its contribution to the country’s economic development and food security. During this time, Carl has also served as co-principal investigator on several related USAID Livestock Systems Innovation Lab research projects and is a member of the Ethiopian Journal of Animal Production’s editorial board. Prior to joining ACDI/VOCA in 2009, Carl worked for 15 years in academia, focused on agricultural teaching and research, and 15 years in commercial agriculture production. He holds a BS from California State University, Chico, and an MS and PhD from Colorado State University.
