Sierra Leone – Promoting Agriculture, Governance and Environment (PAGE)
Revitalizing the Rural Economy, Empowering Marginalized Peoples
ACDI/VOCA is implementing a 4-year, $13.2 million project, funded by USAID, to improve the economic development of 4 of the country’s most underserved districts. Operating in the districts of Kono, Kailahun, Kenema and Koinadugu, the project is working to increase agricultural productivity while supporting sustainable natural resources management and promoting transparent and participatory democratic governance.
The ACDI/VOCA-led project consortium includes partners Tetra Tech ARD and World Vision International. Through PAGE, ACDI/VOCA and its partners are re-establishing broken linkages in agribusiness value chains that will link 29,000 farm households directly with markets. The program particularly focuses on cocoa, rice and sorghum . The project is expanding access to and improved use of quality inputs and appropriate technologies, and increasing access to financing mechanisms for firm- and farm-level upgrading and product marketing.
ACDI/VOCA’s objective is to support producers’ organizations and marketing associations through a market-driven, value chain-based approach that supports the achievement of USAID’s economic development goals in Sierra Leone. To reach this objective, over the life of the project ACDI/VOCA will establish 375 new farmer field schools (FFS) and support 600 existing FFS to become marketing associations. By the end of the project, 106 agricultural firms, marketing associations, and FFS and producer organizations will demonstrate improved use of financial management best practices. ACDI/VOCA will also promote cooperation with other agriculture project components and development partners.
The project also facilitates access to and enhances the quality of supporting government services, promotes the sustainable management of the natural resource base and strengthens democratic culture.
