The Nicaragua Community Development Program improved local economic and social conditions by supporting ongoing community projects through a small-grants program.
Despite progress, Nicaragua confronts tremendous challenges as the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (after Haiti). Nicaragua has a national population of 5.9 million, of which almost half lives below the poverty line.
ACDI/VOCA’s team actively engaged local Nicaraguan civil society organizations, local governmental units and private sector stakeholders to mobilize communities, enhance inclusion and participation, and addressed the most pressing needs using the grants program. The project ensured strong citizen support, broad and sustainable impact in communities, and an enduring positive impression of U.S. government assistance.
The program implemented several projects including the refurbishment of the German Miranda Baseball Stadium in San Pedro de Lovago; providing equipment/materials to a maternal guest house in Rosita, RAAN and providing computers to the Juan Pablo II Institute in Managua.
