Former ACDI/VOCA Staffer Appointed Philippines Assemblywoman

Longtime Project Officer to Help Shape Regional Governance

Qualified, empowered and diverse staff form the bedrock of ACDI/VOCA. We are proud to celebrate the recent achievement of Dayang Sangkula Jumaide, who on May 8 swore in as assemblywoman of the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in the Philippines. President Benigno Aquino III presided over the oath-taking ceremony at the Malacanang Palace.

Native of Tawi-Tawi Serves Program for Six Years

Dayang, a native of Tawi Tawi, became project officer for ACDI/VOCA under the Sustainable Health Improvement for Empowerment and Local Development (SHIELD) project in 2006. The USAID-funded program operated in the province of Tawi Tawi, the southernmost province of the Philippines and part of the autonomous region.

“She was selfless in extending direct service to the people in whatever capacity she was assigned,” said ACDI/VOCA Country Representative George Dalire. “As a registered nurse, she always made herself available to help beyond the call of duty.”

Dayang’s appointment is due to her excellent record as a development worker. She will help during a governmental transition period and promote better-governance initiatives of the administration of President Aquino and the newly appointed ARMM Governor Hajiv Hataman.

Promoted Mother, Child and Community Health

Dayang led the ACDI/VOCA provincial team in creating community health campaigns on family planning, maternal and child health, and tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment. She also anchored the provincial health office’s weekly radio broadcast, “IPHO Hour.”

“She was generous of her time, even on weekends and holidays, just to promote and encourage women to have complete prenatal check-up and give children under five complete immunizations,” Dalire says.

She helped organize community health action teams and encouraged local officials to support community health programs. She assisted in the successful Medical Civic Action Program of the hospital ship USNS Mercy in Tawi Tawi in 2006. The joint U.S.-Philippine armed forces mission brought rare, sophisticated medical services to isolated and poor island communities of Tawi Tawi.

Now her leadership will extend to the entire region.
