Haiti – Value Chain Analysis
Creating a Competitivenesss Strategy for Haiti's Handicraft Industry
In 2006 ACDI/VOCA carried out a value chain analysis of the handicraft subsector in Haiti under the AMAP BDS IQC. Haiti’s handicrafts are internationally recognized for their quality and creativity, yet a number of factors limit their potential market reach and competitiveness. The purpose of the analysis was to better understand the industry’s constraints and opportunities, and to present the findings to key stakeholders in order to develop a competitiveness strategy focused on greater efficiency, differentiation and access to new markets. The ACDI/VOCA team conducted interviews with more than 50 market actors and additional interviews with experts in the global handicraft market. Following the in-country analysis, ACDI/VOCA held a workshop for industry stakeholders, enabling them to use the results of the analysis to establish priority activities, plan next steps and delegate tasks for creating an industry competitiveness strategy.
