Carl P. Birkelo, Ph.D.

Deputy Chief of Party/Animal Industry Specialist, Ethiopia

Dr. Birkelo is a highly qualified professional with technical expertise in livestock nutrition, management, feed manufacturing and formulation. He has over 30 years of experience in both the private sector and academia and has consulted in Latin America, Africa and Central Asia. He currently serves as deputy chief of party for the USDA-funded Feed Enhancement for Ethiopian Development (FEED) program, which works to increase the incomes of smallholder farmers through improved access to consistent, affordable, high-quality animal feeds that can support greater livestock productivity and efficiency. Dr. Birkelo has been providing technical assistance to multiple stakeholders to develop the animal feed supply chain and improve livestock management in six states of Ethiopia. Dr. Birkelo earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in animal nutrition from Colorado State University and his B.S. in animal sciences from California State University.
