Give to Create Jobs in Yungas, Bolivia

In the Yungas region of Bolivia, 94 percent of people live on less than $2 per day.

The Gift of Coffee Excellence will help drive sustainable economic growth in this remote region by equipping coffee farmers with the tools and training they need to engage with high-value markets.

This activity will complement the on-going support provided by USAID to UAC-CP and the coffee sector in general.

Thank you! ‘Gift of Coffee Excellence’ Reaches Goal to Help Bolivian Farmers

Good news! Our community has made the “Gift of Coffee Excellence” a resounding success, raising $10,000 to provide local coffee research and expertise to Bolivian farmers in the rural Yungas region.

“We’re extremely thankful to everyone who supported this effort to help fight poverty and hunger in Bolivia,” says Diana Roach, senior director of ACDI/VOCA’s volunteer program. “This shows incredible support and belief in the work we do.”

The generous donations—from people like you—will be used to outfit a coffee research institute at the Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-CP) and provide expert training so the local farmers can get the skills and equipment they need to reach premium global markets and earn more money.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed and participated in this campaign,” says Treena Bishop, ACDI/VOCA-Bolivia chief of party. “This is a much anticipated project because the donation of equipment will have a huge impact in regards to helping local coffee producers improve their income by reaching higher quality coffee markets.”

Gift of Local Research, Expertise

Bolivia is one of the least-developed countries in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in South America. This project, which will begin soon, will provide equipment and training so rural coffee farmers in the Yungas region of Bolivia can produce premier-quality beans—using locally appropriate, sustainable coffee-growing practices—for high-value markets.

The Gift of Coffee Excellence will:

  • Purchase a coffee bean roaster and threshing machine for the new laboratory at the new coffee institute and research center at the UAC-CP. The institute focuses on coffee growing and production methods specific to the Yungas region of Bolivia.
  • Pay for the travel of a volunteer coffee expert to provide training in region-specific post-harvest handling and processing.
  • Increase rural coffee farmers’ incomes and help fight poverty and hunger.

Coffee Farmers’ Incomes Could Double Because of Your Gift

Currently, coffee farmers in Bolivia must ship their beans to the capital city of La Paz for processing because the region lacks a processing plant. Your gift of a coffee bean roaster and threshing machine will enable Yungas farmers to process their coffee beans locally using sustainable methods developed at the new coffee institute.

In addition, the donations will pay for the travel of a volunteer coffee expert.

“We will begin working with our Bolivia team to identify a volunteer, funded by the campaign, who can provide technical assistance to the university and local producers in the proper operation of the new equipment,” says Roach.

Based on previous ACDI/VOCA experience working with rural coffee farmers in Bolivia and elsewhere, our staff expect that higher quality coffee beans and improvements in post-harvest processing could double the income of Yungas coffee farmers.

Gift Benefits Rural Coffee Farming Families, Women in Yungas

Coffee is one of the main cash crops of Yungas, a rural Andean highlands region. Within Yungas, in the Coroico area, approximately 8,000 families manage about 10,000 acres of coffee production. Most of these families are members of local cooperatives and associations.

The coffee institute will work closely with surrounding communities in Coroico and Coripata, including groups like CARITAS Coroico's PACHAMAMA, a cooperative of women coffee growers.

ACDI/VOCA’s staff in Bolivia estimate that approximately 3,000 of the Yungas coffee-producing families will benefit directly from the coffee institute and any equipment available at the new research center.

Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-CP) has been a strong local partner since 2002 and is the only institution of higher education in the Coroico area. Core to its mission is the principle that education is the foundation of growth in the Yungas.

In a 2003 report entitled "Best Practices in Poverty Eradication," UAC-CP was designated as one of the seven most effective and replicable initiatives worldwide working to eradicate poverty. The report was presented by the NGO Sub-Committee for the Eradication of Poverty, a committee promoting the U.N. Millennium Development Goals and reporting to the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
