Good news! Our community has made the “Gift of Coffee Excellence” a resounding success, raising $10,000 to provide local coffee research and expertise to Bolivian farmers in the rural Yungas region.
“We’re extremely thankful to everyone who supported this effort to help fight poverty and hunger in Bolivia,” says Diana Roach, senior director of ACDI/VOCA’s volunteer program. “This shows incredible support for and belief in the work we do.”
The generous donations—from people like you—will be used to outfit a coffee research institute at the Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-CP) and provide expert training so the local farmers can get the skills and equipment they need to reach premium global markets and earn more money.
“Thank you to everyone who contributed and participated in this campaign,” says Treena Bishop, ACDI/VOCA-Bolivia chief of party. “This is a much anticipated project because the donation of equipment will have a huge impact in regards to helping local coffee producers improve their income by reaching higher quality coffee markets.”
Staff will start the program soon. The funding will purchase a coffee bean roaster and threshing machine for the new laboratory at the new coffee institute and research center at UAC-CP. The institute focuses on coffee-growing and production methods specific to the Yungas region of Bolivia.
Volunteer Coffee Expertise Too
In addition, the donations will pay for the travel of a volunteer coffee expert.
“We will begin working with our Bolivia team to identify a volunteer, funded by the campaign, who can provide technical assistance to the university and local producers in the proper operation of the new equipment,” says Roach.
ACDI/VOCA’s staff in Bolivia estimates that approximately 3,000 of the Yungas coffee-producing families will benefit directly from the coffee institute and the equipment at the new research center. UAC-CP has been a strong local partner of ACDI/VOCA since 2002 and is the only institution of higher education in the Coroico area.
