Mali – Agricultural Value Chain Initiative

Addressing Value Chain Constraints to Empower Producer Groups

ACDI/VOCA recently received a three-year, $1 million, USAID-funded Agricultural Value Chain Initiative subcontract from Abt Associates, who is the program’s prime, to address value chain constraints in Mali. Currently, producers, producer groups and the private sector in Mali are faced with limited opportunities to make investments in irrigation and other technologies that would add value and increase the production and sales of their agricultural products. To overcome these constraints, ACDI/VOCA’s program will achieve the following goals:

  • expansion of irrigated agriculture from lowland, flood control-type irrigated perimeters to fully and/or semi-controlled irrigated perimeters as appropriate to the area
  • development of appropriate mechanisms and instruments with key partner banks and financial institutions to support the development of production
  • expansion of markets and marketing with increased access to them for producer and trader groups to ensure food security, raise incomes and develop the economy
  • introduction of improved technologies, increased technology transfer and scaled up use of improved technologies in all aspects of agriculture
  • integration of activities and programs from the northern regions of Mali into other regional activities through a market-oriented effort
  • enhanced capacity of targeted village organizations to protect, improve and manage their natural resource base
  • collaboration with the government of Mali in appropriate policy arenas to facilitate trade, finance and improved productivity in selected sectors
